Obituary for "Betty" Sample Elizabeth Cross (Baxter)

Sample “Betty” Baxter Cross, 89, of Proctor, WV passed away on Tuesday, February 07, 2017 while at Wetzel County Hospital.

Betty was born March 21, 1927 on Newman Ridge in Wetzel County, daughter of the late Forrest Wolsey and Pearl Anne (Bohrer) Baxter.

She worked as a telephone operator when she met the dream of her life; later, after raising her family she worked at the former Grant’s and Ames department stores as a clerk. She loved quilting, baking, cake decorating and canning. She loved working outside and was known to run a pretty mean weed eater, she was a 4-H leader for over twenty years, WV 4-H All Star, served her community as an EMT with Grandview Squad and member of New Martinsville United Methodist Church, but her greatest love was her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four siblings, Thelma Meadows, Joseph Baxter, Clarence Baxter and Charles Ray Baxter.

Surviving are her husband of sixty-eight years, William “Bill” Cross, Jr.; four daughters, Linda (James) Simms of Mt. Clare, WV, Jean Mayfield of St. Marys, WV, Cheri (Mike) Acree and Nancy (Mark) Davis both of Proctor, WV; sister, Gladys Clegg of Moundsville, WV; six grandchildren, Marcie (Eric) Kincaid, Jim (Nicole) Simms, Billie Jo (Matt) Haddox, Tiffany (Brett Leary) Acree, Matt Lookadoo and Christa (Franklin) King; fifteen great grandchildren.

Friends received 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, February 9, 2017 and 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m., Friday, February 10, 2017 at the Jarvis-Williams Funeral Home, 1224 S Bridge St., New Martinsville, WV.

Interment to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park in New Martinsville, WV.
