From the first few conversations I had with Devin as his Cross Country Captain my senior year, I not only knew he had great potential to become a good runner, but was a kind-hearted and good-natured boy (Devin's freshmen year).
One thing I always admired was Devin's seemingly quiet yet infectious smile that somehow instantly made any situation brighter (realizing that physical pain would shortly ensue from an intense workout....)
I’ll never forget his sheepish grin as he came briskly walking/jogging to a practice after I previously left a message that encouraged hard work, how much his team needed him, and that I believed in him.
No physical pain I endured from any Cross Country Work-out or race will ever compare to the overbearing sadness and feeling of despair when I learned that this always good-spirited boy would not have the chance to light up a room with that smile. He would no longer have the chance to run a race.
I will always remember the happy disposition, earnest boy who suddenly stopped running up the seemingly never ending hill; never getting the chance to stand at the peak, recalling all the wonderful memories captured during his long-lived life.
