Obituary for Barbara J Powell (Johnson)

Barbara J. Powell (Johnson), age 83, of New Martinsville, WV, died Tuesday, March 19, 2019 in New Martinsville.

Barbara was born on June 16, 1935 in Marshall County, WV, daughter of the late Albert and Genevieve Johnson.

She was a graduate of Sherrard High School and of Glenville State College. She was a retired employee of the WV DHHR, and worked as an Extension Agent in Wetzel County, WV. She was an active volunteer with Helping Hands Food Pantry, was a founding member of Town and Country Days, and served as a volunteer with various civic organizations including Easter Seals and the New Martinsville Library. She was an active member of the New Martinsville United Methodist Church. She was an avid reader and an enthusiastic fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the West Virginia University Mountaineers.

In addition to her parents, her husband of 54 years, Joseph Powell, preceded her in death. In addition, two brothers preceded her in death: Edwin Johnson and Walter Johnson.

Surviving are her two daughters, Jacqueline Powell of New Martinsville, WV and Jennifer Powell of Morgantown, WV; foster-son Chester Waybright of Bakersfield, California; two grandchildren, Jessica (Dan) Miller of Pittsburgh and Joseph Powell of New Martinsville, WV; one great grandson, Declan Miller of Pittsburgh, PA; a sister, Dorothy Prenat of Glen Dale, WV; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also surviving are special friends Jo Fauber of New Martinsville, WV, Hugh Frye of Hannibal, Ohio and Babs and Sam Stewart of New Martinsville.

Friends will be received on Noon to 4 p.m., Sunday, March 24 at Jarvis-Williams Funeral Home, 1224 S. Bridge Street, New Martinsville. Funeral service on 11 a.m. Monday, March 25, 2019 at the New Martinsville United Methodist Church with Pastor Steven Rector officiating. Interment to follow in Northview Cemetery in New Martinsville, WV.
