Obituary for Carlton Robert Roberton

Carlton “Carly” Robert Roberton, 72, of Weston, WV, passed away on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at Stonerise Nursing Home in Nutter Fort, WV.

He was born April 12, 1950, at The Globe Inn (his maternal grandparents’ residence) in Buckfastleigh, Devon in Southwest England to the late Robert Roberton and Colleen Samson.

In addition to his mom, Carly was met at the heaven’s gate by his only; son, Derek; his beloved maternal grandparents, Edward (his hero) and Jesse Tucker; his late aunt, (Doreen Cain) and uncles, Ted, Bill and Derek Tucker, who loved him like a brother. Carly is survived by his daughter, Rebekah of Marietta, OH; a younger stepbrother, Phillip of Pricetown; by his older sister and dearest friend, Liz and her husband (Elizabeth and Bob Rinehart of Bridgeport) and their two daughters (Carly’s nieces) and husbands, Jessica and Dan Ware of Weston, and Bronwyn and Josh Wilson of Elizabethtown, KY and their two children, Elizabeth and Jarrett Wilson, whom he loved dearly. Also surviving are his Uncle Al and Aunt Liva Tucker of Buckhannon and Aunt Ann Tucker in England.

In January 1955, Carly along with his mother and sister Liz immigrated to the United States settling in New Martinsville, WV. Carly’s passions were his family, travel and everything West Virginia. After attending Paden City High School, Carly joined the Army. He was thrilled to be stationed in Germany as a truck driver where he fell in love with adventure on the road. Upon returning to WV from the Army, the first place he went was to his favorite swimming hole at Blackwater Falls, this was before they restricted swimming a few years later. Carly was featured in the Chicago Tribune jumping off the falls as there was a reporter there on vacation and who was fascinated by this fearless young man jumping from such heights into the deep pool below.

Returning home to the Ohio Valley, Carly went to work in the coal mines, but that only lasted a few years as the mine closed. He then started driving trucks and fell in love with the road, which led to an opportunity to drive cross country routes based out of North Carolina. He enjoyed it so much, he purchased his own truck, a Dale Earnhardt, Jr. model, and spent thirty years driving cross country. He covered every state except Hawaii. To his disappointment, health required him to retire from driving, and he worked locally for a couple years near his home in North Carolina, all the while feeling the pull of West Virginia and his dear sister Liz. He would say, “every day I couldn’t wait to get home to West Virginia.” With his adventure days behind him, it was time for him to return home to his family. He settled in Weston in 2015 to be near Liz and the rest of the family. He enjoyed following his beloved Mountaineers and Steelers. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Weston where he was the best cheesecake maker for various events.

The family would like to thank the staff of the VA Hospital in Clarksburg for the excellent medical care they provided Carly for the past five years and to the entire staff at Stonerise Nursing Facility in Nutter Fort for taking such great care of him for the last five months.

Friends will be received noon until time of service at 2 p.m., Monday, August 29, 2022 at the Jarvis-Williams Funeral Home, 1224 S Bridge St., New Martinsville. A graveside service will take place at Northview Cemetery in New Martinsville. Honor guard will be conducting graveside services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
